Inference, Intermediate Level
Inference is the skill of drawing conclusions based on evidence. To give a very simple example: if a comprehension text says that there is snow on the ground and that Sandra is shivering, we can infer that she is probably cold.
Many questions in the GL Assessment 11+ English exam require inference skills, and students often find this challenging. It’s common for children to feel that their only options are to locate the exact answer in the text or to guess randomly!
This is a normal stage in learning: something that most young people go through.
This fully interactive online course is ideal for children in years 4, 5 and 6 (ages 9 to 11) who are preparing for grammar school entrance, and who want to make their inference skills more secure while developing strong, reliable exam technique.
The comprehension texts and questions are fun and varied. Key advice and answers to every question are provided in friendly, step-by-step videos, presented by the popular educational author and YouTuber Robert Lomax.
Effective learning isn’t just about practising lots of questions: this course is designed to engage children’s imaginations and deepen their understanding.

Course Content
GL Assessment exams test a wide range of inference skills. These frequently include:
- Inferring a situation from context: People are wearing swimming costumes and there is a salty smell in the air … It is summertime at the seaside.
- Interpreting emotions: Tom looks away without answering, a lost expression on his face … He feels overwhelmed and confused by what he has heard.
- Using logic to complete (or fill gaps in) a sentence: A car speeds through a puddle, leaving a nearby pedestrian joyful/enthusiastic/wet.
There are several other common question types, and others that are less common. This course includes almost every kind of inference question that is likely to appear in a GL 11+ exam.
By the end of this course, your child will understand a wide range of inference techniques and should be ready to progress to the Advanced Inference course (coming soon), or to my intermediate-level courses covering reading for meaning, spelling, missing words, and other aspects of the GL English test.
